Certifications, We Don’t Need No Stinkin IT Certifications!

Everyone is probably familiar with the extremely famous saying, “We don’t need no stinkin badges”

The morale of this statement is simply that evil doesn’t need the color of law.

How might this attitude apply to IT marketing consultants trying to make sales with prospects that are demanding to see certifications?

 

Who Needs Certifications?

Certifications can be an important step for some IT professionals that are seeking to obtain employment with a computer consultant or in an IT department.

Many times those making the hiring decision don’t understand technology and have no way to make a proper assessment of applicant’s claims about their level of tech knowledge.

Certifications can be a useful tool in this area but no human resources managers should ever be deceived into thinking that IT applicants who hold these certifications are experts.

We all know of the horror stories of those technicians that look good and have the right certifications but could not computer repair their way out of wet paper bag.

 

The Rules Don’t Apply

Now what about the situation where you have a managed services company and are making a bid to business professionals that are asking to see all your certifications before he/she will sign up for your marketing proposal?

Of course, if you have tons of great certifications then it can not hurt to show them off.

However, because of the limitations of certifications many computers consultants do not have them nor use them in the hiring process.

This is primarily because entrepreneurs don’t need certifications!

When a computer repair technician decides to ‘put out their own shingle’ that act alone is all the certification that any prospect should be considering.

 

Self-Taught

Many of the technical people that I have met that also own a computer service firm have admitted to me that they were self-taught.

Being self-taught works if you happen to be a man or woman of action that is passionate about your work and have powerful dreams to fulfill.

After all, Abraham Lincoln taught himself Law and was able to make it all the way to the Presidency; because he was an entrepreneur deep down in his heart.

 

The Solution

So the next time you come across some controller or CFO who is asking to see all your certifications in the sales and marketing process you can simply say, “Certifications, we don’t’ need no stinkin certifications!”

This is because entrepreneurs don’t need the ‘color of authority’!
